We have also done a great deal of work on the example center in the past few months. IACCE Response - CertifiChecks Claim Chapter 7 Bankruptcy

IACCE would like to alert all the chambers in Illinois that CertifiChecks has filed Chapter 7 Bankruptcy as of Thursday, February 26, 2009.  Certifichecks is a company used by many chambers as the vehicle for community-wide gift programs.   EFFECTIVE IMMEDIATELY, NO CHAMBER MEMBER SHOULD ACCEPT ANY CERTIFICHECK GIFT CERTIFICATE.

More information to come - IACCE has set up a web site to help Chambers keep track about what's going on with the CertifiCheck situation.

UPDATE - March 13, 2009

What Can You Do?!
IACCE has been in communication with our Attorney General's office here in Illinois this week.  For those of you effected by the CertifiCheck Crisis:

  1. E-mail the IACCE office at Liz@iacce.org and let us know you are being effected, how much you believe is still outstanding, and other ways you are dealing with the crisis.
  2. Go to the IACCE web site dedicated to the CertifiCheck Crisis to keep up to date on news as it happens and see what other chambers are doing.
  3. Call the Attorney General's office and let them know about your situation.  Their phone numbers are:  217-782-1090 or 800-243-0618.
  4. File a complaint with the Attorney General's office with the forms on their web site.
  5. Finally, tell your members who bought the certificates and those holding certificates (who can't use them now) to file a complaint using the same forms on the AG's office web site.  The AG's office said the more complaints, the more information they have to file a law suit and the quicker they can jump in on behalf of the citizens of Illinois!

Industry NEWS and Feature Articles

Bob Harris Offers Illinois Chambers Survival Tips in a Tough Economy

My chair-elect was excited when he accepted the position 12 months ago. Today he's asking, "How do I lead in difficult economic times?"  Today's economy is challenging associations. Members are scrutinizing dues, exhibitors cutting booths and sponsorships are slipping. Yet, through the decades associations have been resilient. Answer the chair-elect earnestly, "The chamber needs your leadership to survive the year; your legacy may be reflected in our survival and eventual prosperity."

Don't make the big mistake of hiding the facts, exhausting the savings or canceling the conferences. Commit to being transparent, creative and good stewards of the association.  Read the rest of the article here

Web 2.0 and Social Media advice for Chambers

There's a lot of talk these days among chambers about using Web 2.0 services and engaging your members with social media. First, what is web 2.0?  Web 2.0 represents the changing of websites from providing information or e-commerce to interactive, collaborative, engaging communities.   Examples include social networking sites, blogs, wikis and photo-video sharing sites where visitors participate in the content generated and the "experience."  Second, should chambers use social media?  After all, chambers are one of the original "social networking platforms."  According to the 2008 Cone Business in Social Media Study, 93% of Americans believe that a company should have a presence on social media sites and 85% believe that these companies should use these services to interact with consumers.  The answer is yes.   Read the rest of the article here..
