Although accustomed to leading work units as large as 1.000+, Carl understands that true leadership involves valuing and connecting with the individual. His 27-year work experience reflects the Department's increasing reliance upon Carl's work unit analysis, strategic planning, and team building skills. 1:00 p.m. Dave Alwan:
driven, determined, devoted, and dynamic self-made entrepreneur
Being successful starts with a passion and enthusiasm for what you do in life. Dave comes from a family that has been in the retail and wholesale meat business for several generations. After breaking away from the family business, Dave has taken his own business, Echo Valley, from a small local meat shop into a leader in retail and wholesale across the United States. Learn more about Echo Valley’s story, including Dave’s experience pitching to the “sharks” on the ABC TV show “Shark Tank,” and also learn how your belief in yourself and your vision are key ingredients to achieving your business and life goals.
About Dave: Third generation in a family-owned meat business, Dave Alwan left the family business to found Echo Valley Meats Inc. in 1998 with his wife, Dawn. Together they’ve grown Echo Valley from an “Old Fashion Style” retail meat market, into wholesale products, a mail-order gift catalog, fundraising division, and gourmet catering.
Not satisfied with his local success, Dave decided to audition for the ABC TV show “Shark Tank.” He flew to Los Angelos, gave his “pitch,” and impressed producers enough to make it to the show. Though he didn’t secure a deal with the “Sharks,” he impressed them with his meat products, authenticity, and enthusiasm. Not getting a deal has still been successful in many ways. Online sales have increased over 600%, and Dave has been recruited to speak at colleges, universities, corporations, and business organizations across the country. Dave’s common-sense approach to life and business is truly inspiring.

3:00 p.m. Closing Keynote - Telling Your Story
Presented by Blake Zitko and Scott Callicott, State Farm
Storytelling is quickly becoming the way to best relate to constituencies and customers. At the same time, there are some stories and messages that may require special care to pass along to your audience – if you tell them at all. In their presentation, Blake Zitko and Scott Callicott, both currently successful communicators with State Farm Insurance and past political professionals on several state and federal campaigns, will share tips on telling your organization’s story in a compelling way, capturing your audience’s attention while avoiding unintended negative consequences.
Blake currently serves as the Brand Journalism/Storytelling lead in Public Affairs with State Farm. His team works to develop strategic approaches to the way State Farm communicates and tells the State Farm story with key audiences, on their preferred channels and at the right time. Blake has worked in strategic communications, digital and media functions with State Farm. Prior to State Farm, Blake worked with Starbucks, local/national political campaigns and for a major university.
Scott is a communication strategist and member of the Issues Management team at State Farm Public Affairs, working to protect the State Farm brand. Scott has worked in strategic communications, executive communications and issues management roles at State Farm. Presented by Steve Robinson, Area Director, Constant Contact - Essential Financial Policies
Presented by Scott Heape, McLean County Chamber
Poorly written or non-existent financial policies and procedures can lead to employee fraud, legal issues, IRS scrutiny, or cash flow shortages, and that is just the tip of the iceberg. Any of these occurring will lead to a loss of members and community confidence. A properly crafted set of financial policies can help mitigate these risks. Join Scott P. Heape, CPA for a presentation and discussion on what financial policies and procedures your Chamber needs for organizational success. We will discuss financial policies and procedures, budgeting, and financial forecasting.
Scott P. Heape has been a licensed CPA in both Ohio and Illinois since 2007. Before joining the McLean County Chamber of Commerce in 2012, he audited and advised a diverse mix of non-profit entities, and has seen it all from well-oiled machines to organizations struggling to survive. His experience provides a unique perspective on the proper financial policies and procedures needed to ensure the smooth operation of any nonprofit organization.
